A Change Will do You Good

Last week we talked about the Courage not to change, this week we’re going to focus on the more frequently discussed converse- the courage to do something different. Why is it that we find it so hard to change? What is it about getting rid of a habit or an attitude or a job that makes it one of the hardest things for us to do?

Sadly, most of us equate our identities with what we do; “I’m a Lawyer.”

“I’m a Barisita”

“I hate meat.”

“I’m obnoxious.”

Too often we associate our jobs or our actions with the core of who we are and that’s what makes it so hard to change. If you quit smoking, maybe you won’t be yourself? If you get a new Job, how will you define yourself?

It is this kind of thinking that we need Courage to overcome, it is this sort of mindeless labeling that deadens so many of us and keeps us from making any significant changes to our lives.
