Like a Bolt from a Clear Blue Sky

As we said last week, wisdom is not something that hits you like a bolt out of the sky. That doesn’t mean, though, that it isn’t something that’s given to you. Throughout life people; teachers, parents, friends and mentors, gift us with countless words of advice, admonishment and anecdotes. Who doesn’t remember a story his father used to tell over and over or a one-liner that a favorite teacher used almost every day?
The problem with this kind of wisdom is that we often don’t recognize it for what it is at the time. Most of us accumulate these little snippets of personality and insight pretty much passively and it is only later, upon reflection or sudden insight, that we realize that what we were being given was not just a memory, but wisdom.
